Up early for breakfast for our 800 kilometre drive to Renner
Springs. First stop is the Lazy Lizard
Hotel at Pine Creek. A quirky little
hotel with plenty of history in and around the pub including its’ own
collection of local pythons, crocodile skins, heads and claws and very poor
quality cappuccinos!
Next stop was an early lunch stop at Katherine, of course we
stopped at the first service station, bought a pie and sausage roll which were
nice but the disgusting toilets were very unpleasant. Through Katherine and of course there are
plenty of facilities which would have been a little more in our style.
Called into Daly River Hotel at about 2pm and had a cold
beer and wine to wash the dust down. One
of the best pubs in the west with so many things to look at, could have stayed
for hours. Took plenty of photos!!
Finally made it to Renner Springs, it’s a motel/hotel in the
middle of the desrt (as the locals say) but a bit past halfway to Alice Springs, clean and quiet so looking
forward to a nice tea and a good sleep for the next trip of about 700
kilometres to Alice Springs tomorrow
Saw some interesting wildlife today, a dingo enjoying the
early morning sun near the side of the road, a snake who tried to get run over
but we missed him by….this much. A
couple of dead buffalo on the side of the road, obviously victim of the trucks
in the area. Lots of birds, the usual
suspects - black and white cockatoos,
corellas and hundreds of small birds who weren’t too smart, I think we hit
about a dozen. We were a bit more
careful when we were close to the wedge tailed eagles, think they’d do a little
more damage than a budgerigar?
The landscape of course has changed from wetlands with
pandanas palms and tea tree scrub, through rocky ranges and now into low
growing wattles and wild flowers. The
red of the earth is so rich here it looks unnatural.

Looks like someone has somewhere to stay when he visits? |
What did you leave behind at the pub as a memento of your being there? When we did the deserts last September a lot of the pubs had the bras, hats, shirts etc - must be an outback pub requirement! Keep up the good work, I’m enjoying reading about the trip, especially the places we’re yet to be! Stay safe xxx
